Heat pump grants 2026: air-to-water and geothermal

MaPrimeRénov' up to €5,000 (air-to-water) and €11,000 (geothermal), x5 CEE grant, €15,000 éco-PTZ, 5.5% VAT: France's 2026 heat pump aid and RGE rule.

In short

In mainland France, an air-to-water heat pump can receive €5,000, €4,000 or €3,000 of MaPrimeRénov’ (the State renovation grant) depending on your income (blue, yellow, purple bands), up to €12,000 of expenditure. A geothermal heat pump receives €11,000, €9,000 or €6,000, up to €18,000 (service-public.gouv.fr, page verified 1 September 2026). On top of this comes a CEE grant (energy saving certificates), multiplied by 5 under the Heating Coup de pouce (“boost” scheme) if the heat pump replaces a coal, oil or gas boiler (Ministry for Ecological Transition). The rest can be financed by an éco-PTZ (zero-rate eco-loan) of up to €15,000, and VAT is 5.5%. All these grants require a RGE installer. Since 1 September 2026, MaPrimeRénov’ Major Renovation (Rénovation d’ampleur) no longer funds hybrid heat pumps with gas or oil back-up (service-public.gouv.fr).

Single-measure MaPrimeRénov’: the amounts

The single-measure route now funds only a few types of works in mainland France, including the two types of heat pump below; hybrid heat pumps are not on the list (service-public.gouv.fr):

Heat pump (mainland)Blue (very modest)Yellow (modest)Purple (intermediate)Maximum eligible expenditure
Geothermal or solar-thermal, with underground exchanger€11,000€9,000€6,000€18,000
Air-to-water€5,000€4,000€3,000€12,000

In mainland France, these scales apply only to blue, yellow and purple households; the “pink” single-measure scale exists only in the overseas territories. Expenditure includes the cost of the works and of any related works. An advance may be granted up to 50% of the expected grant.

Conditions (service-public.gouv.fr):

  • home built at least 2 years ago for an air-to-water or geothermal heat pump (compared with 15 years for other measures);
  • main residence, occupied no later than 1 year after the request for payment of the balance;
  • works started only after the acknowledgement of receipt from the Anah (the national housing agency), which does not amount to approval;
  • a new application is possible within 5 years, if the first grant has been paid and the two do not exceed €20,000 in total.

The air-to-air heat pump is not on the list of MaPrimeRénov’ measures in mainland France. It may, however, fall under a standard CEE sheet (France Rénov’).

The heat pump in a major renovation

A heat pump can form part of a MaPrimeRénov’ Rénovation d’ampleur (major renovation) package, which funds 80%, 60%, 45% or 10% of the works excluding VAT depending on your income, up to €30,000 (gain of 2 classes) or €40,000 (3 classes or more). Since 1 September 2026, for a detached house, the grant is no longer awarded if gas heating is kept, and a heat pump with fossil-fuel back-up can no longer be funded (service-public.gouv.fr). In this route, it is the Anah that claims the CEE: you do not apply for them yourself.

The CEE grant and the Heating Coup de pouce

The Heating Coup de pouce multiplies by 5 the volume of certificates for an air-to-water or water-to-water heat pump (sheets BAR-TH-171 and BAR-TH-172) replacing a coal, oil or gas boiler, for operations started since 1 October 2025 (Ministry for Ecological Transition). Conditions:

  • home occupied as a main residence;
  • seasonal energy efficiency of at least 111% at medium or high temperature, 126% at low temperature, stated on the quote and the invoice;
  • removal of the old boiler by the professional, stated on the invoice;
  • supplier’s offer accepted before the quote is signed.

For operations started since 1 January 2026, the minimum grant amounts in the former Coup de pouce charters no longer apply: compare the offers of the signatories, whose list was updated on 6 October 2026. The Coup de pouce can be combined with MaPrimeRénov’ and the éco-PTZ, but only one CEE grant is possible per operation.

Éco-PTZ and 5.5% VAT

Éco-PTZ (service-public.gouv.fr): interest-free loan, granted with no income condition, for a main residence built more than 2 years before the works start. Maximum amount: €15,000 for a single measure (excluding glazing), €25,000 for 2 types of works, €30,000 for 3 or more. It can be combined with CEE and Anah grants.

VAT: supplying and fitting energy-saving heating equipment qualifies for the 5.5% rate in a home completed at least two years ago (article 278-0 bis A of the CGI, General Tax Code; France Rénov’). Reversible, fixed, connected air-to-air heat pumps rated A++ (mono-split) or A+ (multi-split) have qualified since the arrêté (ministerial order) of 13 July 2026, published in the JO (Official Journal) of 17 July 2026 (service-public.gouv.fr). An installation including a boiler that can use fossil fuels remains at 20%.

RGE: the common condition

MaPrimeRénov’ requires a professional with RGE status (reconnu garant de l’environnement, environmentally certified), except for connection to a heat network (service-public.gouv.fr). The éco-PTZ requires a RGE firm holding the certifications that match the works. CEE grants also require a RGE professional (France Rénov’), and for some operations the qualification must be valid on the date the quote is signed (Ministry for Ecological Transition). Check it in the official directory before signing.

FAQ

Can I combine MaPrimeRénov’ and the CEE grant for an air-to-water heat pump?

Yes, on the single-measure route: MaPrimeRénov’ can be combined with CEE paid by suppliers. You declare all grants to the Anah (service-public.gouv.fr).

My house is 5 years old: am I entitled to MaPrimeRénov’ for a heat pump?

Yes, for an air-to-water or geothermal heat pump: the age requirement (at least 15 years) is reduced to 2 years for this equipment on the single-measure route (service-public.gouv.fr).

Is a gas hybrid heat pump still funded?

Not by MaPrimeRénov’ Major Renovation since 1 September 2026. On the single-measure route, only air-to-water and geothermal heat pumps are on the grant scale (service-public.gouv.fr).

I have no boiler to replace: am I entitled to the Coup de pouce?

No. The x5 bonus requires replacing a coal, oil or gas boiler. A standard CEE grant is still possible.

My installer is not RGE: what happens?

You lose MaPrimeRénov’, the éco-PTZ and CEE grants, which all require a RGE professional.

Which professional to consult

Before choosing a heat pump, a DPE (energy performance certificate) carried out by a diagnostiqueur (property surveyor) shows the home’s starting class, which is useful if you are aiming for a major renovation. For the éco-PTZ or a works loan, the courtier en crédit (mortgage broker) compares banks. If you are buying a house heated by oil or gas, the agent immobilier (estate agent) and the notaire (notary) help you cost the replacement into your offer.
