Frequently asked questions
Is it a buyer's or seller's market across the harbour?
It has moved toward balance. Nova Scotia carried roughly 4.8 months of inventory in early 2026, up from 4.4 a year earlier, and Halifax-Dartmouth listings rose through the spring, giving buyers more choice than during the tight markets of recent years. Well-priced homes still sell, however. (Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS, March 2026.)
Does HST apply when I buy a new Bedford or Dartmouth home?
On new construction, yes. Nova Scotia's HST is 14% (5% federal plus 9% provincial as of April 1, 2025) and applies to newly built homes, while resale homes are HST-exempt. On a new build that is a large sum before any rebates, so confirm what applies. (Canada Revenue Agency; Province of Nova Scotia.)
How do Dartmouth and Bedford differ?
They have distinct characters. Dartmouth, the 'City of Lakes,' offers a revitalizing waterfront, ferry access to downtown and generally more attainable homes, while Bedford is a quieter, suburban family area of newer detached houses along the basin. Comparables from one rarely transfer to the other. (Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS, April 2026.)
