Questions

Which state has the highest property tax?

Measured as median tax paid ÷ median home value: New Jersey, 2.11% (median $9,590 a year); Illinois, 2.01% (median $5,298 a year); Connecticut, 1.81% (median $6,643 a year). In dollars, the highest median tax is in New Jersey ($9,590), New Hampshire ($6,667), Connecticut ($6,643).

What is the average property tax rate in the US?

The median property tax paid by owner-occupants, $3,119 a year, is 0.94% of the median home value of $332,700 (ACS 2020-2024). This is a ratio of two medians, not the rate any one home pays.

Is the property tax rate the same as the tax bill?

No. The bill depends on the assessed value, the local levies (county, city, school district, special districts) and the exemptions you claim, such as a homestead exemption. The Census figures are what owners report paying.
