Each figure is the median across the state's ZIP Codes of the average premium per policy (or of the nonrenewal rate) reported by insurers; ZIP Codes are not weighted by their number of policies, which the file does not give. “Change”: the median of each ZIP Code's own change from 2018 to 2022. A falling median, as in Florida, does not necessarily mean owners paid less: policies that moved to a FAIR plan or a surplus-lines insurer are not in the data. Nonrenewals “not reported”: every ZIP Code of Texas shows exactly zero, so the field was not filled in; the national figure leaves it out.

What the data covers

The Treasury's Federal Insurance Office published these metrics with its report on homeowners insurance markets. The underlying data was collected from insurers by the NAIC and state regulators: it covers about 80% of HO-3 and HO-5 premiums nationwide, but not state FAIR plans, surplus-lines insurers, flood insurance, or the years after 2022, and its coverage varies by state. Read it as a comparison between places, not as the price you will be quoted today.

Questions

How much is homeowners insurance in the US?

In 2022, the median premium per policy across ZIP Codes was $1,551 a year, from $1,015 in Pennsylvania to $3,211 in Florida (state medians). These are the latest figures the Treasury published, for 2018 to 2022; premiums have changed since.

Where are insurers not renewing home policies?

In 2022, the median ZIP Code nonrenewal rate was highest in Nebraska (2.3% of policies), South Carolina (2.18% of policies), North Carolina (2.09% of policies).

Why might my premium differ?

The figures are averages per policy in each ZIP Code: they mix homes of every value and coverage level. Your premium depends on the home, its rebuilding cost, the deductible, the claims history and the insurer. They also leave out state FAIR plans and surplus-lines insurers, which many owners in high-risk areas use.
